Bar at the Edge of the Earth was the brain child of Jean-Francois Bouchard and Julien Gabriel working in the Special Events department of Cirque du Soleil circa 2004-2005. Conceived as a performative environment rather than a show, the project sought to transform the observation lounges of 3 ships in the Celebrity Cruises fleet into an alternate universe filled with state of the art projection mapping, immersive decor and original Cirque characters magically appearing and occupying the space side by side with the patrons. For this project I was chosen to create the six characters inhabiting this world, choreograph their dramatic entrances in conjunction with the projection mapping of Moment Factory, then train the actors the performance trajectory of the evening experience. That, along with training a house keeping staff how to be stage managers, prompted Cirque to offer me the full time position of Artistic Coordinator. This was an all encompassing job which entailed handling all logistics of casting including coordinating and running auditions, training the new cast members, integrating them on board, monitoring show reports and maintaining the artistic and technical integrity of the “show” in collaboration with the higher management of Celebrity Cruises. It was no small task but an incredible education most people never get to experience so early in their career!!!
